Sunday’s AOS event will be on the high dune farmland of Turkey Ridge. It’s been a number of years since this map was last used and we would like to thank the landowners, the Otakanini Topu Trust for allowing us to hold the event here. We are also indebted to Daniel Monckton and Mike Beveridge for the hours they have spent clambering over the hills, during a very hot summer, to give us a completely updated map for this event!
The terrain features a mix of high pasture hills and valleys, some eroded sandy sections, and other areas with more intricate contour detail in scattered or more dense Manuka forest (leg cover recommended). To make best use of the terrain and keep the amount of climb on each course manageable there is a 1200m walk from the event centre to the start, with a climb of about 80m over this distance. There will be water at the start. While you will still encounter some hills on your course, the reward is spectacular views over the Kaipara Harbour on one side, and the long stretch of Muriwai Beach and rolling surf of the Tasman Sea on the other, so take time to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery!
Access to the event will be signposted from Rimmer Road. Parking is available in a paddock right next to the event centre, however at one point there is a narrow grass slope to traverse. In planning the courses the setter and controller have driven across this many times but if you are nervous about this, there is alternative parking in the first paddock you come to, about 500m from the event centre. There will be someone there to guide you.
We look forward to seeing you and bring plenty of water to drink!
