President’s Introduction
Kia ora all. April was a quiet one locally with just one event run by us at Riverhead’s Robinson Road. Thanks to Paul Ireland and Geoff Mead for setting the courses. The main feature of the month of course was NZ Champs in Nelson. It was great to catch up with club members down there who I haven’t seen regularly since moving to Wellington. The club hasn’t always been the greatest at acknowledging the hard work put in by our volunteers, so we’re working on some ways to show more appreciation. All volunteers will now get a helper’s voucher at the end of the event they’ve helped with which they can use on their next NWOC event.

Cameron de L'Isle - Recipient of Orienteering New Zealand’s Innovation Award for 2021
At the 2022 National Champs held over Easter weekend, Orienteering New Zealand announced the 2021 recipients of ONZ awards. North West is delighted to congratulate Cameron de L’Isle for winning the Innovation Award.
This award is for an individual, club, or group that demonstrates innovative approaches that have the potential to advance the sport. Innovation could be in a number of areas including technology, event formats, mapping, sports development, or process/system advances.
Cameron de L’Isle received this award in recognition of his role as instigator of the O-Map of New Zealand project - an innovative idea using work pioneered in Finland and applying it to New Zealand. Working with others, Cameron’s is creating a giant interactive orienteering map of New Zealand.
Commenting on Cameron’s work, ONZ President Pete Swanson, said, “A lot of people have been super impressed with the work you have done in the open source mapping space – this is a brilliant bit of work you have done which goes a long way to democratising map development in NZ, so fantastic. This has been a really notable innovative initiative and the Council all agreed that you have done something really great here.”
Cameron’s work can be viewed here.
Congratulations Cameron.

A reminder that Club membership fees are now due and need to be paid to ensure you are eligible for members’ rates at all orienteering events.
We have a special deal this year - NWOC membership subscription rates have been reduced for 2022. And this year we are also trialling a new club membership plus rogaine entry combo which offers good savings for those who love our rogaine series.
The new combo deal means you will effectively get free entry to one rogaine – plus all the benefits of club membership. We have 3 rogaines planned for 2022.
Please pay your fees now - Existing members can simply credit the club bank account (WESTPAC Account 03-0243-0247251-000 and include your name in the reference field.) – no need to log in or re-register.
Those selecting the membership/rogaine combo deal will receive a credit voucher before the start of the rogaine series. Note the first rogaine is on Sunday 29 May so get your membership fees paid now so you receive your voucher for this event.
