Barlow Road Training Map
Last Updated: 23rd February 2025
Keen to do some independent orienteering training or to add focus to a forest walk?
We have devised a new training map with 21 marked control sites on the Barlow Road map. Each control site is marked by an orange and white orienteering flag suspended from a tree (but no numbered standards).
It is planned to leave the flags in the forest until approximately mid-April.
Download and print the map below. Make up your own training course from a selection of controls on the map.
Controls south of the road on the map tend to be more challenging. Please note that some parts of the map and tracks are not up to date.
- Barlow Road map: access via car park at junction of Barlow Road and Ararimu Valley Road, Riverhead Forest.
- Casual recreational access is generally allowed to this area of forest at weekends. The forest can be closed for harvesting / fire danger / motorbike and car rallies etc. You are responsible for your own safety and access to the forest. Possession of an orienteering map does not imply right of access.
- Be aware of other forest users: vehicles, bikes, mountain bikes, horses, dogs (and their walkers).
- Sites are marked with an orienteering flag.
- Use the marked control sites for control picking or make up your own course.
- The area is rugged, you are responsible for your own safety. Lower leg cover is recommended.
- Have fun!
